The Swiss Feminist Geographies (SGF) thematic group was established in the fall of 2018 by Elisabeth Militz and Karine Duplan.
It serves as a pivotal hub, fostering connections and collaborations amongst feminist geographers at all stages of their academic careers, spanning across various universities and research institutions in Switzerland. The core mission is to bridge the linguistic and institutional divides that often leave students, educators, and researchers with a vested interest in feminist geography isolated from one another.
Despite the widespread presence of individuals dedicated to feminist geographic inquiry across Switzerland’s educational and research landscapes, there remains a tangible disconnect, particularly when it comes to transcending language and institutional barriers. Recognizing this gap, the thematic group is committed to cultivating a vibrant, inclusive platform that facilitates the sharing of gender-centric, queer, postcolonial, and anti-racist perspectives within the realms of research, pedagogy, and the broader academic experience.
A key objective of the group is to amplify the visibility of feminist perspectives, ensuring that they are prominently featured and integrated within geographic education and research. Through the groups concerted efforts, it aims to create a supportive, interconnected community of feminist geographers, promoting a rich exchange of ideas, methodologies, and insights that are critical to the advancement of our field. In doing so, the group strives to contribute to the broader transformation of academic spaces, fostering environments that are more equitable, inclusive, and attuned to the diverse needs and perspectives of all individuals engaged in geographical inquiry.
